My son was the INNOCENT victim of a drive-by shooting while in my mother's driveway on March 4, 2009. It was the single most unbearable event I've experienced in LIFE so far. I remember becoming very reclusive after it all happened... I simply couldn't wrap my head around losing my only child to violence. Many people never get to know about the amazing volunteers and professionals who devote their lives to specifically helping people cope with acts of extreme violence; I did this collage about 4 months after Josh was killed as a part of grief therapy while in VOVC (Victims of Violent Crimes) Counseling. It was a very therapeutic exercise that I eventually took others through as a way of them remember their loved ones with joy and less grief.
The exercise allowed me to focus on celebrating Josh's LIFE... not his death... not the horrible way he left this earth. People kept saying, "Celebrate Life" and I kept asking, "HOW?" In my private space, I came up with this exercise, shared it with my counselor (who really encouraged me to work on this), and eventually taught a 2-hour workshop to other men and women in VOVC counseling.
Needless to say... I've been crying all morning and just needed to do something to honor my child... and so I chose to share this with others for the first time (publicly).
