For as long as I can remember,
I've had to take a book
or pad of paper
with me EVERYWHERE I go...
Often times,
people either laugh at
or criticize me
for carrying too much stuff...
but I just have this phobia
when it comes to being idle.
It wasn't until recently,
when I ordered a DVD art workshop
by Virginia Cobb
that she said something
that turned the light on for me.
She said,
*"I think artists have a low threshold for boredom!"*
Wow!
That's it!
That's what I need to avoid no matter what...
*boredom!*
This piece is a doodling
I did in the car
on the way to do our weekly shopping...
I used a small clear candle
to fill certain areas of my doodling
in my Canson Multi-media 98lb paper sketchbook;
then used my Peerless flat watercolor sheets
to quickly get some color on the doodling
until I could get home and add some serious ink.
This will likely become

I remember the other day mentioning to someone that I couldn't understand ever getting bored....there are just not enough hours in a day for me to do all I want to do. I really love your preventative measures for boredom.....so beautiful and creative....I always love your design sense. Hey Angela....you could always move out this way....I feel like I live in God's country here....just could use a bit more sunshine then we get. v/f
Angela L Walker replied:
:) Thank you so much, Linda! I definitely won't be living here much longer... may take me a year or two, but I'm outta here!

Oh my, I've missed so many wonderful comments on this particular piece by women I truly admire. Thank you so very much and please excuse me for responding so late. One more thought on BOREDOM from my view: Here in Dearborn, Michigan, the beauty of nature is pretty scarce... like many urban areas, there's a bit of beauty surrounded by a lot of poverty, trash, acts of extreme violence and other such stuff. For me, so much of what surrounds me reminds me of my son so my thoughts are not always as focused as I'd like them to be... When I was in Arizona and Nevada last year, I saw such beauty that I want to move there so I can be surrounded by God's Earthly Handiwork and the awesome beauty of this glorious land. Boredom is akin to idle thoughts and mine will unconsciously drift to the violence that surrounds this area unless I have something upon which to focus... that's why ART is so very dear to me... I really mean it when I say it helps me survive each new day. Hugs to all of you. Thanks so much, Lenore, Judy, Mada, Alga, and Sandra! :) I really appreciate your comments and hope you know that even if you don't hear back from me right away. Love, Angela

A beautiful homage to art versus boredom. For me the worst boredom occurs while waiting sometimes up to an hour in a doctors office patient room with nothing to do or look at! I think next time I'll bring colored pencils and then tape my design to the wall for the next bored patient to comntemplate! But like Lenore, my other idle time I try to look for inspiration in nature. great conversation starter! fav!

Although I happen to have a different philosophy about being idle, I can appreciate this image for being great artwork! The colors and designs are fabulous. I'm very seldom if ever bored...not when I have such life to look at! Vote, fave, and my Pick of the Day in Female Artists group discussion!

Hi Chaline! Thanks so much for commenting on this piece that was so therapeutic for me... I find that whenever I'm riding as a passenger in a car, my thoughts drift to crazy places if I'm idle... places that allow my Inner Critic to mess with me in an unproductive way. Yep, as you say, having books, papers, canvases, and all that wonderfully colorful stuff around helps stave away the boredom that lurks just around almost every corner. :)
